It is time to re-asses the future of Hong Kong’s Disneyland (“Hong Kong Disneyland optimistic for summer after losses shrink”, May 16).
Disneyland has not made a profit for the government in the last eight years and only made a profit in three out of the 18 years that it has been open. The performance was not helped by Disney opening a resort in Shanghai in 2016.

The amusement facilities in Hong Kong are obviously insufficient and I am sure that the new Frozen-themed attraction due to open in November will not change the situation, although The Walt Disney Company will probably make a profit from management fees.
We have another loss-making park as well in Ocean Park. Hong Kong therefore has two loss-making parks. It would be much better to close Disneyland and concentrate on improving Ocean Park to make it a really worthwhile entertainment centre.

Most importantly, this would provide an area for much needed housing. Building could start almost immediately, as all the infrastructure and transport links are already in place. It could be completed years before the Lantau Tomorrow Vision development or the Northern Metropolis project and help address the shortage of affordable housing, which has been repeatedly highlighted as the most important issue for Hong Kong.
