I refer to “Why India is wary of China’s BRICS expansion push as Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Egypt seek to join” (July 5).
The European Union has opened its borders and the nations there are like people on a bus who want it to move. The EU hasn’t accepted Turkey, which is partly in Asia, as a member. That country is like a man still outside the bus who wants it to stay.

Nato welcomes new members provided that they have no border dispute. So it hasn’t accepted Ukraine as a member. That country is like a man waiting for a bus that will never arrive.
Unlike the EU, the BRICS bloc is not facing an immigration problem. Unlike Nato, BRICS countries include India and China, which are both in the group in spite of their border conflict. The bloc is like a proper bus, moving and stopping to take anyone.

The EU has 27 members, Nato 31 members and the world about 200 states. That means that the vast majority must make the best of whatever comes along. And if it’s an alliance dominated by Russia and China, why not?
