I refer to “Golf course or housing: why not tear down village houses instead?” (July 7).
When I look at small houses, I don’t see wealth, but agony and inconvenience for residents. Although the indigenous villagers get to live in detached houses, they must be dying to enjoy modern facilities such as clubhouses and infinity pools in neighbourhoods where 7-Eleven, Cafe de Coral and Wellcome are just a stone’s throw away, like for many Hongkongers.

The small-house policy is outdated and distorts Hong Kong’s property market. Our government could tailor a high-rise redevelopment plan to resettle the villagers, while unlocking more vertical space for public or private housing. Such a programme could benefit all parties.
The best way to convince everyone is surely to start with a small and successful example.
