Letters | Has Hong Kong really thought its tech ambitions through?

I vividly recall the sense of relief when the mainland began easing its three-year-long “zero-Covid” restrictions. The hope for a rebound and prosperity brought about a wave of positive energy.
The Hong Kong government also unveiled numerous ambitious plans to revive the economy, epitomised by the slogan “Hong Kong is back”. However, the harsh reality has set in: high interest rates, sluggish exports and a lacklustre stock market.

Nevertheless, I am not worried about this reality, as it is beyond our control. What concerns me is the substance of our plans and policies. Hong Kong has never lacked ambition. We have introduced many grand ideas.

However, why do we feel as if we are lagging behind others in the region, such as Singapore? It seems we have not been diligent enough in our approaches. Let me illustrate this with two examples.

First, let’s consider the new technology park in the Northern Metropolis. Hong Kong is not lacking in technology sites, such as Cyberport and Hong Kong Science Park. What is the merit of building a new park? Is it because Cyberport and the Science Park have fallen short of expectations?
