In his keynote address on the Belt and Road Initiative, President Xi Jinping said China would continue to promote green development. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s chief executive has said the city is well-placed to promote and benefit from the initiative.
It’s a pity, then, that the proposal for development of 9.5 hectares of pristine land at the Fanling golf course seems to be contrary to the fourth step outlined in Xi’s keynote speech. Developing the many alternatives to the proposal – particularly brownfield sites, but also the new development areas and the Northern Metropolis – would comply with the fourth step if planned and carried out properly.

Could our chief executive be asked to have a closer look at this proposal and be persuaded to scrap it altogether? Both he and the secretary for culture, sports and tourism praised the achievement of Hong Kong’s first individual gold and the team bronze in men’s golf at the Asian Games, so why not save the environment and promote the sport? Future generations would thank them for it, and it would comply with the fourth step mentioned in Xi’s speech.

Ruining golf course won’t solve housing problem
The controversy over the government’s plan to build public housing on part of the Fanling golf course still dogs Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu’s administration. As a local resident, I am writing to express my firm opposition to the proposal.
