Letters | Hong Kong libraries must stay on trend to win back readers, such as by going digital
- Readers discuss the ways to compete against myriad online entertainment for people’s attention, alleged antisemitism in China, and US accusations of Indian involvement in a murder plot

The emergence of electronic books and the convenience of book-ordering platforms, coupled with the shift in reading habits as a result of our prolonged social distancing measures during the pandemic years, have drastically changed what and how we read.
“Boring” libraries now find themselves swimming against the tide of plentiful and diverse entertainment offerings instantly available online. But are they fighting a losing battle? The answer is an empathetic “no” as there are multiple ways to give a new lease of life to local libraries, which still play a pivotal role in promoting reading.
Providing a chic and cosy reading environment would certainly lure readers back to local libraries. Comfortable sofas and beanbags are a good starting point. Why not replace plain-looking rectangular tables with ones of different shapes, sizes and colours? Renovate or refurbish the libraries if necessary to offer readers more space. Install floor-to-ceiling glasses to let natural light come in. A library with well-thought-out interior design would certainly win the hearts of readers of all ages.
The Leisure and Cultural Services Department should also consider designating certain areas as coffee corners – the aroma of freshly brewed coffee will blend well with the reading atmosphere. Stable and speedy Wi-fi connection should be offered.
