I refer to the article, “Arts hub an option for new museum” (December 12).
It’s a relief that Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Kevin Yeung Yun-hung has given reassurances that the bizarre “museum reshuffle” proposal to accommodate a new museum showcasing the nation’s achievements was just an option. The proposal was contained in a paper submitted to a Legislative Council panel for discussion.

The government would be unwise to move the Science Museum in Tsim Sha Tsui to Sha Tin and break up the Heritage Museum there, placing its collections in several places – just so it could turn the Tsim Sha Tsui site into a museum celebrating the nation’s achievements.

It is also worrying that some legislators had suggested sacrificing the City Gallery in Central to make way for the new museum.

The reshuffle proposal had given some of us the impression that the government is more concerned about promoting Chinese history and achievements than local heritage and science in general.
