I refer to the report, “Lee urges Cathay Pacific to solve capacity problems after cancellations” (January 10).
Chief Executive John Lee Ka-chiu must appreciate that Cathay Pacific places safety ahead of inconvenience. Capacity issues are causing flight cancellations and the airline regrets this, yet a fatal crash caused by rushing to deploy crew not fully trained would be unthinkable. Pilots are not taxi drivers, whose lack of standards could have been a factor in numerous crashes and fatalities.

Cathay Pacific would not place the safety of its crew and passengers at risk by allowing aircraft to fly with reduced crew. Lawmaker Gary Zhang Xinyu’s negative comments reflect his ignorance of aviation and of Cathay’s commitment to its staff. Cathay Pacific has stood by Hong Kong through our darkest moments, perhaps now the city can show some patience and support in return.

Aircraft safety issues must be addressed globally

I refer to reports on a disturbing event regarding the quality of Boeing aircraft, especially the 737, a workhorse of passenger aviation. This safety issue and that of bogus parts found on many passenger planes are extremely worrying.
