Google searches in Hong Kong this year have been dominated by the anti-government protests that have rocked the city for more than six months, according to data released by the internet giant. The company announced its most searched terms of 2019 last week, with results for overall searches as well as categories for public figures and news (split locally and internationally), and movies. Hong Kong internet forum LIHKG , popular with protesters and their supporters, topped the overall list and the ranking for local news. Outspoken anti-protest lawmaker Junius Ho Kwan-yiu, who became a hate figure among the protest movement after appearing to shake hands with alleged perpetrators involved in the Yuen Long MTR station attack on July 21 , was the most searched local public figure. Chief Executive Carrie Lam Cheng Yuet-ngor, head of Hong Kong’s government, came second in that category. On a lighter note, sci-fi films based on comic books dominated the movies list. Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Endgame generated the most searches, while the company’s Captain Marvel took third place. DC Comics’ Joker ranked second. Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld scored the most searches on the global figures list, following his death at the age of 85 in February. Here are the top five most searched terms overall in Hong Kong this year. 1. LIHKG The Reddit-like local forum LIHKG, which has been described as the virtual command centre for the leaderless protest movement, was the most searched term. The forum serves as a platform for users to anonymously post news of upcoming protest events and protest strategies, which can be voted up or down. 2. Jacqueline Wong Hong Kong actress Jacqueline Wong Sum-wing, 30, made headlines in April when she was caught up in a cheating scandal . A video of her kissing married actor and singer Andy Hui Chi-on in a taxi went viral after being published by a local newspaper. Hui publicly apologised, while Wong pressed pause on her acting career and fled to the US to avoid the backlash. She reportedly returned to Hong Kong last weekend. 3. The Legend of Haolan This Chinese historical drama, produced in mainland China, drummed up interest because it starred actress Wu Jinyan and actor Nie Yuan. They had also played leading roles in a previous hit historical drama – Story of Yanxi Palace . Searches for The Legend of Haolan , which premiered on Hong Kong broadcaster TVB on February 4, peaked between February 3 and 9. 4. Thanos Thanos is the supervillain who appeared in the most anticipated Marvel film of the year – Avengers: Endgame – as well as the previous film in the series, Avengers: Infinity War . The giant purple character, created by Jim Starlin, generated the most searches around the time the movie premiered globally on April 22. US President Donald Trump’s campaign for re-election recently created an advertisement that morphed Trump into Thanos, with the quote: “I’m inevitable.” 5. Education Bureau A surprising one, perhaps, but the city’s Education Bureau made it to the fifth slot as children and parents sought to keep abreast of class suspensions in November. Searches peaked between November 17 and 23, when protesters were occupying Polytechnic University and the nearby Cross-Harbour Tunnel was closed to traffic.
