South Korean actresses Lee Mi-sook and Song Seon-mi were urged to break their silence after President Moon Jae-in said the death of actress Jang Ja-yeon in 2009 was one of several cases that needed to be reinvestigated as scandals sweep through the country’s entertainment industry.
Moon said on Monday: “There are cases where the truth was buried as investigators intentionally covered them up or didn’t do their jobs properly. Some suspicions remain and numerous questions are still unanswered. The cases have two things in common: influential people are involved and the prosecution and the police didn’t try to find out the truth.”
Moon said the public deserved to know more about two cases – the death of actress Jang and the 2013 sex scandal involving former vice justice minister Kim Hak-eui – amid the current scandals in the K-pop industry.
This includes the drama over drug use and sex attacks at a Seoul nightclub connected to BigBang singer Seungri, and a chat room where K-pop stars including Seungri, Jung Joon-young and Yong Jun-hyung shared secretly recorded videos of them having sex with women, some of whom had been rendered unconscious with drugs.
