Sandara Park, formerly of K-pop girl band 2NE1, has taken on a new career as a music instructor in Myanmar on the television show My Music Teacher, Mingalabar, broadcast on South Korean TV channel SBS FiL.

In the programme’s first episode, aired last week, the singer taught drums to children in Myanmar, where opportunities for artistic and athletic education are limited. She played the instrument in harmony with her students and also performed a solo version of 2NE1’s flagship number I Am the Best.

“I think I am not teaching, but learning,” Park said during My Music Teacher, Mingalabar (mingalabar is a Myanmese greeting). “The students and I are seemingly growing up together. I want to become a teacher who cheers up the kids and helps them become optimistic.”

The singer’s agency YG Entertainment said: “Park will team up with the local students and show off her unexploited sides.”

The K-pop singer is hugely popular in Myanmar, where 2NE1 held a large gig in 2015. When she arrived in the city of Yangon, fans flocked to the airport to welcome her.

Park appeared in the television programme My Music Teacher, Mingalabar.

My Music Teacher, Mingalabar, which will also feature Korean singers Yoon Do-hyun of rock band YB and Sandeul of boy band B1A4, aims to provide music education to students in Myanmar. The show airs every Thursday on SBS FiL and SBS MTV.

Park, also known as Dara, rose to stardom in the Philippines after appearing on the talent show Star Circle Quest in 2004. She debuted as a 2NE1 member in 2009 and enjoyed popularity thanks to hits including Fire (2009).

Following the band’s disbandment in 2016, Park launched a career as an actress, singer and TV personality.
