Chinese pianist Lang Lang announced his wife’s pregnancy this week, putting an end to months of speculation. The 38-year-old posted a drawing of a piano and a baby on Weibo – China’s Twitter – on Thursday with the caption: “Eagerly awaiting [the arrival] of the little audience member of a family concert”. The news comes 16 months after their wedding in France. Rumours that his wife, Gina Alice Redlinger , was pregnant began swirling in April when the German-Korean pianist, who is 12 years Lang’s junior, posted a video on Weibo which revealed a slightly bulging belly. The speculation intensified when the pair began appearing regularly in advertisements for baby products such as milk formula. The pair have, since their marriage, been frequent guest stars on Chinese reality-television programmes, giving the public a glimpse of their domestic life. Redlinger met Lang Lang in Berlin in Germany a few years ago, and has since performed around the world with his International Music Foundation, which he set up in 2008 to inspire future generations to pursue music. The couple have not revealed the gender of the baby or how many months Redlinger is into her pregnancy. Still, Lang Lang’s social media post has gone viral on Chinese social media and messages of congratulations have flooded their Weibo accounts. One Weibo user commented: “They are a couple from heaven. The baby they give birth to should be a child prodigy. The whole family can play piano now.” Another said: “The baby’s DNA must be very strong. I look forward to seeing the baby.” In an interview with daily tabloid newspaper Southern Metropolis Entertainment last December, Lang said he wanted to have two or three children. In a September interview, Redlinger said she loves children. “I hope I will be a good mother … my parents gave me a serious education. Since childhood, their love had made me strong. I want to give this same feeling to my future children.” Redlinger said she had learned a lot about how to be a mother from her time on the fourth season of reality-television show Viva La Romance on Mango TV. On the show, which aired in June, a group of married female stars went travelling while their husbands stayed behind and watched their wives from afar. The show explores how these couples communicate while separated and captures the moment of their reunion. Redlinger told Southern Metropolis Entertainment she liked the show as, other than herself, all the women on it are now mothers. “I listened to their stories to [mentally] prepare to be a mother. I learned from them. It’s difficult for me to say what kind of mother I will be, [but] I hope I will be a good mother that her children can rely on. I will love my children a lot. I hope this love can make my kids strong.”
