  • At Korea Square 2021, Hongkongers can ‘taste and feel Korea at one place’, says Lee Young-ho, the director of the Korean Cultural Centre in Hong Kong
  • Among the activities to take part in are the playground challenges from Netflix hit series Squid Game and a chance to dress up in traditional Korean outfits

Hong Kong fans of Netflix hit series Squid Game can experience the challenges featured in the show for themselves at the Korean Cultural Centre’s marketplace event “Korea Square 2021” at PMQ in Central on Hong Kong Island this weekend.

The dalgona challenge, ddakji (where you use a paper card to flip an opponent’s card on the ground) and guseulchigi (the goal is to win marbles from your opponent) are some of the activities visitors can join.

The traditional childhood games became global sensations after the dystopian K-drama thriller series went viral on the streaming service.

Entry to the three-day festival, which begins on Friday, is free of charge, as are the activities there. Visitors can immerse themselves in games, try out K-beauty products, enjoy Korean food and participate in workshops.

“As it is difficult to travel to Korea because of the pandemic, ‘Korea Square 2021’ is one of the best ways for Hong Kong people to taste and feel Korea at one place,” says Lee Young-ho, the director of the Korean Cultural Centre in Hong Kong.

There will be complimentary make-up and hairstyling services, and discounts for buyers of products from big-name Korean luxury skincare brands such as Sulwhasoo.

Other activities include a performance by Hong Kong taekwondo team KTAHK, while Creatio Video and Photo Studio will be offering free Korean-style photo shoots for which you can try on traditional Korean hanbok outfits.

Visitors will be able to satisfy their Korean food cravings with free snacks and lunchboxes, as well as cold brew coffee and special rice cake desserts.

The festival opens at PMQ Courtyard and Marketplace on October 29, and will run over the Halloween weekend.

Korea Square 2021, PMQ Courtyard & Marketplace, 35 Aberdeen Street, Central, Hong Kong. October 29 (6pm-8pm); October 30 (11am-8pm); October 31 (11am – 5pm)
