Kathryn Haywood was a typical third-culture kid growing up in Hong Kong in the 1980s.

“My mum and dad moved out [from the UK] in the 1960s; they’re both teachers. My brother and I were both born and raised in Hong Kong and we grew up in the Mid-Levels. I was an [English Schools Foundation] kid and went to Island School,” she says.

“I didn’t go to university and all my school friends did. I was the only person in my whole school year that didn’t leave Hong Kong. I stayed and the idea was to take one gap year, and within that year I discovered dubbing.”

Time flew for Haywood as she settled into voice acting, doing things like dubbing Jackie Chan films and Japanese anime into English. Before she knew it, she was a weather presenter on Hong Kong broadcaster TVB’s English-language Pearl channel.

“I was doing a voice-over and I got talking to a guy I regularly worked with. The studios were always freezing and I was sitting there shivering and he was in a T-shirt like it was nothing.
