The festive season is a time of excess: people eat too much, drink too much and spend way too much money on gifts.
But it doesn’t have to be like that.
There are other ways of giving that can help people and the planet.
To give you a helping hand, we have compiled four events happening in Hong Kong.

Test the brain and support mental health
For months, Hong Kong has been embroiled in anti-government protests. Matching the rise in violence and social unrest has been an increase in mental health problems – particularly among the city’s youth. According to mental health charity Mind Hong Kong, up to 1.7 million Hong Kong people have a diagnosable mental health problem, while 53 per cent of secondary school students have displayed symptoms of depression.
On December 4, Mind Hong Kong will host a Christmas fundraising trivia night at Little Creatures Brewery in Kennedy Town. The price (HK$350 per person) includes sharing food for each table, one drink each, a donation to Mind Hong Kong and the chance to win some prizes. Shop with a conscience while supporting female brands
Female Entrepreneurs Worldwide (FEW) is helping people shop with a conscience by staging a showroom selling items from innovative and sustainable female-led brands, as well as running wellness and beauty workshops. The showroom, to be held on November 29 and 30 at The Rooms in Tai Kwun in Hong Kong’s financial district, Central, will feature a range of brands including vegan footwear label Taylor+Thomas, sustainable clothes from Tove & Libra, contemporary handmade jewellery by Tanzire; and children’s party wear from Tacheri.
Also showing will be skincare brand AO+ Skincare, integrative wellness centre LifeHub and personal-care brand Luuna Naturals. Wellness centre Fivelements will host holistic workshops, such as sound healing and tea ceremony meditation. For details, visit: the FEW website.

Tune into the LOVE 21 Foundation
Hong Kong charity LOVE 21 Foundation supports families in the city who live with Down’s syndrome and autism through health and nutrition programmes (think yoga and surfing sessions). Now, it’s time to support them.
On December 7, the Hong Kong Women’s Choir will perform jazz, pop, and traditional Christmas songs as well as seasonal tunes from the British Brass Company of Hong Kong at an event to raise funds for the charity. Mince pies and mulled wine will be served, while treats will be available for kids – including a visit from Santa. The event will be held at The Sanctuary in Wan Chai. The Hive Spring in Wong Chuk Hang will host a Christmas charity bazaar on December 14 (10am-6pm) in collaboration with the German Speaking Ladies to benefit the Hong Kong Breast Cancer Foundation.
