Two Hongkongers are among 10 finalists named in a global eco-design award organised by fashion NGO Redress.
Hong Kong Polytechnic University student Tsang Fan-yu and design assistant Esther Lui were among the five designers from the region (there are also five from Europe) to make the list of the EcoChic Design Award finalists.


The 10 designers will continue their ambitions to create a more sustainable fashion industry by producing a six-piece collection showcasing their creativity and using zero-waste design techniques and reconstruction.

  


The collections will be shown at Hong Kong Fashion Week in January 2016. 
“The world is finally waking up to the horrific environmental and social impact of wasteful fashion and people are questioning how it has become the world’s second-most polluting industry, after oil. This is a crucial time to act because fashion consumption is at an all-time high which is driving textile waste levels, and the associated pollution, to shocking highs,” says Redress founder Christina Dean. “It’s imperative that we educate tomorrow’s fashion industry. Through The EcoChic Design Award, we are teaching designers around the world to reduce waste through sustainable design innovation. The change we need is in their hands,” she continues.
The EcoChic Design Award attracted a record number of entries from around the world with more than 60 university partners joining to promote the competition to their students and alumni, including Central Saint Martins in Britain, the National Institute of Fashion Technology in India and the Beijing Institute of Fashion Technology.
