Restaurant review: Ufufu Cafe, Tsim Sha Tsui doesn’t deserve the buzz, despite some sweet treats
Gimmicky dishes such as the burger with flowing cheese and an impressive list of desserts aren’t quite enough to justify the hype surrounding Ufufu Cafe
Ufufu Cafe in Tsim Sha Tsui has been generating a lot of buzz among diners eager to try the colourful dessert parfaits and gimmicky dishes such as the burger with flowing cheese. It took us weeks to secure a booking in the restaurant, which is always crowded with walk-in customers at the door, but not everything lives up to the hype.
We liked the honey and cheese pizza (HK$58). The mozzarella used in the crust makes it chewy and the Japanese honey went well with the salty flavour of the pizza. But other offerings were expensive and not very good.
The cheese-stuffed burger (HK$108) is served in a plastic bag filled with sauce, mushroom and carrot. The waiter cut the plastic bag in front of us but said the burger was not hot enough. He offered to take it back to the kitchen, worried that the cheese would not be liquid enough to flow out. The next burger he served had boiling hot sauce. The cheese did flow out, but the beef was dry, without much flavour.
Japanese teppan spaghetti Neapolitan (HK$68) with mushroom, egg and onion was too sour, and the sausage was burnt and flecked with charcoal.
The cafe – which originated in Kyushu, Japan, and opened a branch in Macau in March before this outlet in Hong Kong – is famous for its desserts, which did fare better and were also more reasonably priced.
The dessert menu is huge: more than 120 offerings including cake and parfaits, with four having a unique Hong Kong flavour. We tried the tofu pudding with mango parfait (HK$78), which is based on our local tofu pudding. The dessert, which also had cream and vanilla ice cream, was enjoyable for its fresh and sweet taste.
