Restaurant review: Miyaha in Prince Edward – desserts a matcha made in heaven

Japanese collaboration produces mixed results: savoury dishes didn’t excite but delightful green tea desserts save the day

Hong Kong’s obsession with matcha shows no sign of abating. The latest place specialising in green tea dishes (as well as other Japanese fare) is Miyaha, a collaboration between a local owner of a Japanese ramen shop and a Japanese pastry chef from Tokyo, who worked in dessert shops for years in Chiyoda in Tokyo.

We started with savoury dishes. The Kansai pork ramen (HK$52) had chewy noodles that absorbed the broth, which was slightly sweet, not oily, and with a heavy pork flavour.

Fried mackerel

Fried mackerel (HK$40) was so salty it was practically inedible; we had to rinse the fish in water so we could finish it.

Tokusen green tea frozen yogurt parfait

Desserts were an absolute delight. They serve a wide selection of parfaits with different types of fruit. The waiter recommended the tokusen green tea frozen yogurt parfait (HK$50) with matcha ice cream from Hokkaido and dragon fruit. We loved the smooth ice cream that had a natural matcha taste.

Green tea mille-feuille cake

We also liked the green tea mille-feuille cake (HK$46), a smooth, delicious dessert of matcha cream sandwiched between three biscuits.

Green tea serradura pudding

Green tea serradura pudding (HK$42) featured frozen matcha cream that melted in our mouths, and which went well with the sweet red beans placed on top. The transparent jelly used as garnish also had a slight aroma of green tea.

Miyaha in Wan Chai

The food here is good (for the most part) and the prices are reasonable, compared with other similar matcha dessert shops.
