Where a foodie goes for the best-value steak in Hong Kong and the best afternoon tea in London, and where he ate his best meal ever

Quality of food is my most important consideration. But I also like warm and welcoming atmospheres, unique concept menus and locally sourced, sustainable and eco-friendly food, with knowledgeable and well-trained service.

Hidden in an alley, Nove Chinese Kitchen (9 Li Yuen Street East, Central, tel: 2180 6799) is a fun place serving dim sum and some Chiu Chow delicacies – think a casual version of China Club. I’d probably take visitors to their new, fancier branch in the Fringe Club, also in Central on Hong Kong Island.

For tasty and nutritious double-boiled soups with ingredients such as conch, chicken feet, sea coconut, pig’s lung and fish maw, try Ser Wong Fun (30 Cochrane Street, Central, tel: 2543 1032). A comfort casual dining destination for me and my wife, Josephine, is Meen & Rice (Shop 113, The Pulse, 26-30 Beach Road, Repulse Bay, tel: 2566 8886). We love bringing our dogs to the Repulse Bay promenade in the southern part of Hong Kong Island for walks, then having the best congee and noodles.

Feather & Bone (various locations including Bohemian House, 321 Des Voeux Road West, Sai Ying Pun, tel: 3705 0280) has the best-value quality steak. This is our go-to place for last minute neighbourhood dining. Our all-time favourites are the aged grain-fed sirloin or tenderloin. Just order the steaks and sides; don’t bother with the rest of the menu. Bring your own wine.
