Fresh fish, Australian wine, pie ‘to die for’: where this Aussie loves to eat around the world
- Ben Tang, a retailing manager in Hong Kong, shares his favourite places to eat in Australia for freshly caught fish, brilliant bouillabaisse and peerless pies
- In Milan, Italy, he has a go-to place for the best osso bucco ever, and for a trip back in time he heads to ‘the oldest restaurant in London’

Born in Australia, Ben Tang is the general manager of Retail Matters, a subsidiary of the Shun Tak group. Among the businesses he oversees are Icy Matters (Stecco Natura Ice Cream) and Macau Matters (Toys “R” Us Macau).
I love travelling to remote areas of Australia to view natural wonders. Most are only accessible by four-wheel drive and accommodation is generally a tent in the wilderness.
Among the places that I would like to revisit when we can travel again is Fraser Island off Hervey Bay in Queensland. It is the longest sand island in the world, where the beaches are the roads, with beautiful inland lakes and abundant wildlife like dingoes, wallabies, possums, brumbies, turtles, whales and lots of others. It’s a rainforest mixed with sand dunes and coloured beaches.
You can swim, hike, fish, four-wheel drive, lay in the sun, take photos and whatever you can think of in a remote island. Accommodation is lovely, too. Eating your own freshly caught fish is real bliss.
