Former investment banker Dr Jonathan Seah is the chairman of LifeClinic and LifeHub, a functional medicine clinic and wellness biohacking centre in Central, Hong Kong. He spoke to Andrew Sun. My wife, Yulia, and I had our first date 10 years ago in a sushi restaurant, so we love a good omakase. Our go-to places are Sushi Sase (Baskerville House, 22 Ice House Street, Central, tel: 2815 0455), and, for very special occasions, Sushi Shikon (7/F, The Landmark, 15 Queen’s Road Central, Central, tel: 2643 6800), our favourite sushi bar outside Japan . Be warned: chef Kaki-san’s amazing Edomae-style (aged and cured) sushi may forever spoil you for any other sushi. When we’re craving dishes from my hometown of Singapore, Asam Chicken Rice (174 Wellington Street, Central, tel: 2682 6162) is our default for a quick triple-treat fix of Hainanese chicken, rendang and pork knuckle. It’s hard to beat. Café Malacca (508 Queen’s Road West, Shek Tong Tsui, tel: 2213 6613) is also good for their wide selection of Malaysian and Singaporean dishes . My wife and I also love extremely spicy food. Qi – House of Sichuan (2/F, J Senses, 60 Johnston Road, Wan Chai, tel: 2527 7117) has great food and they have plant-based versions of many dishes, which is wonderful with vegan friends. We also like Mana! (8 Staunton Street, Central, tel: 5501 7583) for terrific salads and vegetarian flatbreads. It’s a favourite lunch place, a short walk from LifeHub and LifeClinic. Another nearby place with fantastic healthy options is Sevva (25/F, Landmark Prince’s, 10 Chater Road, Central, tel: 2537 1388). It’s pricier but the terrace has very nice views. During the pandemic, we have come to love hiking and trail running with our three-year-old son and other friends. Our preferred pre-hike ritual is to carbo-load with the best home-made pasta in Hong Kong at Pici (24-26 Aberdeen Street, Central, tel: 2755 5233). To celebrate completing long hikes, we love the irresistible cheeseburgers at Treasure Island Beach Club (Pui O Beach, Lantau Island, tel: 5236 7013), paired with some rosé. We lived in Shanghai for many years. Our favourite restaurant there was Old Jesse (41 Tianping Road, Xuhui District, Shanghai, tel: +86 21 6282 9260), a tiny hole-in-the-wall place with all the classic local dishes. Fortunately, here in Hong Kong there is Liu Yuan Pavilion (3/F, The Broadway, 54-62 Lockhart Road, Wan Chai, tel: 2804 2000), where the Shanghainese dishes are arguably even better, especially their hairy crab roe vermicelli sheets and the steamed river eel. My hobby is street photography, and when the pandemic is over I’d love to hang out with my mentor Patrick Zachmann at Magnum Photos in Paris. This is also where our favourite restaurant in the world is. L’Ami Louis (32 Rue du Vertbois, 75003, Paris, tel: +33 1 48 87 77 48) serves unpretentious French bistro classics and its old-world service is fabulous. The ancient wood panelling and brass fittings redolent of la belle époque always make us feel like lovers in an Audrey Hepburn movie, especially if we are lucky enough to get that table next to the stained window looking out onto the historic Marais district.
