Peking Duck at Hutong restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui is one of the favourite dishes of Macau-based Benjamin Toh, the CFO of SIM Holdings, in Macau.

Where a casino boss in Macau goes for dim sum, egg tarts and pork chop buns, and his favourite places for Peking duck and Italian food in Hong Kong

  • Benjamin Toh is the CFO of SJM Holdings in Macau and says its top Cantonese restaurant is Restaurante Kapok, which serves memorable traditional dishes
  • In Hong Kong he likes Hutong in Tsim Sha Tsui for the Peking duck and the views, and Tosca di Angelo for its ‘spectacular’ food

Macau-based Benjamin Toh is the CFO of SJM Holdings. The company operates the Grand Lisboa, Casino Lisboa and other properties and businesses. He spoke to Andrew Sun

I love both Asian and Western foods. I am very fortunate to experience a wide range of cuisines as I have been working for the hospitality industry for the last 15 years. I tend to just have lunch or dinner in one of our integrated resorts where I can find many good restaurants with a huge selection of foods.

But if I have visitors, sometimes for lunch I will take them to Restaurante Kapok (Hoi Yee Garden, 60 Rua de Hong Chau, Taipa Island, tel: +853 2883 3333). It’s an evergreen local Cantonese restaurant with over 60 years of history in the neighbourhood. It serves a good variety of dishes with great tastes, including traditional dim sum at reasonable price. It’s a good place for a gathering with family and friends.

For dinner, I might suggest a nicer setting like Palace Garden (Level 3, Grand Lisboa Palace, Rua do Tiro, Cotai, tel: +853 8881 1380) or a steakhouse like The Kitchen (3/F Grand Lisboa Hotel, Avenida de Lisboa, tel: +853 8803 7777).

Of course, there are lots of good local Macau snack options, too. For a pork chop bun, I recommend Tai Lei Loi Kei (several locations, including 35 Rua Correia da Silva, Taipa Village, tel: +853 2882 7150). For minchi, try La Famiglia (76 e Beco das Flores, Taipa Village, tel: +853 2857 6131) and egg tarts must be from Margaret’s Cafe e Nata (17B Goldlion Building, Rua do Comandante Mata e Oliveira, Macau, tel: +853 2871 0032).
My other destinations in Macau include Casa de Pasto San Tou Tou (26 Rua Correia da Silva, Taipa Village, tel: +853 2882 7065), Vida Rica Restaurant (2/F Mandarin Oriental Macau, Avenida Dr Sun Yat Sen, tel: +853 8805 8918); in the Artyzen Grand Lapa Resort, Kam Lai Heen (2/F Grand Lapa Hotel, 956-1110 Avenida de Almeida Ribeiro, tel: +853 2856 7888 and Naam (Porto Exterior, tel: +853 8793 4818).

Overseas, I like to go to Thailand to Sorn (56 Soi Sukhumvit 26, Klong Tan, Bangkok 10110, tel: + 66 99 081 1119), a Thai restaurant serving a very nice crab with creamy roe, and Somboon Seafood (several locations 169, 169/7-12 Surawong Road, Suriyawong, Bangkok 10500, tel: +66 2 233 3104), one of the best restaurants for curry crab, crab fried rice and roasted freshwater prawns with glass noodles.

I hope to be able to travel to Hong Kong again soon. I have two favourites in the city for their views and the food. Hutong, which has moved to a new location (18/F H Centre, 15 Middle Road, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 3428 8342) has breathtaking views of Victoria Harbour to go with the flaming Peking duck, with a touch of northern Chinese tastes.

The interior of Tosca di Angelo at the Ritz-Carlton Hong Kong, in Tsim Sha Tsui.
Tosca di Angelo (102/F, The Ritz-Carlton, ICC, 1 Austin Road West, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2263 2270) is a great Michelin-standard Italian restaurant with spectacular service and food, such as the tuna tartare tartlet.
