Seven foodie ways to celebrate Mother’s Day 2023 in Hong Kong, from taking mum for a Michelin-star meal, to dumpling making and a picnic set

  • From a meal at a Michelin-star restaurant to a home dumpling-making kit and gourmet picnic set, we have seven ideas for celebrating Mother’s Day through food
  • Don’t fancy a big meal? Try a Mother’s Day-themed floral cake, a dessert platter or creations from some of Hong Kong’s most talented pastry chefs

Mother’s Day falls on May 14 this year – and there is no better time to treat the mother in your life to some good food.

For the mum that enjoys a meal out, take her for a sophisticated afternoon tea with a stunning view of Victoria Harbour, or indulge at a Michelin-star restaurant with an eight-course dinner.

For the mum with a sweet tooth, express your gratitude with a flower-adorned cake or a dessert board filled with Italian dolci; otherwise, for something a bit more out-of-the-box, go for a picnic; or have a brunch complete with a floral bear workshop.

If your mum is a homebody, stay in and cherish some quality family time with an at-home dumpling wrapping session, an activity that is sure to entertain adults and kids alike.

Regardless of what you are looking for this Mother’s Day, there are so many options – all that matters is what mum would appreciate most. Here are our seven picks.

1. Bianco & Rosso

Bianco & Rosso in Central may be known as a vermouth bar, but its food is pretty amazing, too.

This Mother’s Day, the restaurant is offering a truffle-inspired “European Odyssey” four-course brunch menu (HK$498 per person), which features dishes including burrata, black truffle ricotta ravioli, Sagabuta pork loin, and even a whole three yellow chicken with a vermouth chicken sauce for an additional HK$498 (US$63).

Naturally, the HK$198 free-flow menu is lengthy – with four vermouth options alongside classics like Aperol spritz, negroni and Prosecco.

What separates this brunch from others is the inclusion of one bear-y special activity: an eternity floral bear workshop hosted by Mohlia. Available on May 13 and 14, guests can create their own arrangement made with preserved flowers at HK$200 per bear.

2. Amber

Spoil your mother with an elevated dining experience at the Landmark Mandarin Oriental’s Amber, a two-Michelin-star restaurant headed by Richard Ekkebus.

For Mother’s Day, the chef has curated three menus that include milk-fed lamb saddle with green asparagus and morels, toothfish with lacto-fermented bell pepper, and sayori (Japanese halfbeak) with wheatgrass and horseradish.

The four-course lunch menu (HK$1,988 per person) and six-course lunch menu (HK$3,108 per person) come with a two-hour free flow of Italian sparkling, red and white wine, while the eight-course dinner menu (HK$3,318 per person) comes with a complimentary glass of Dom Perignon 2013 Champagne. The children’s three-course menu costs HK$708 per child.

Mothers who dine at the restaurant will receive premium gifts from Jo Malone, including a gift voucher for a bespoke in-store experience, and the choice of a travel candle or body cream (15ml), plus a variety of cologne discovery sets.

Next door, French neo-bistro Somm is offering a special brunch with a 90-minute free flow on May 13 and 14 at HK$1,068 per person. Mothers can take home either Gucci Beauty’s rouge à lèvres lipstick or liquide mat lipstick.

3. Vive Cake Boutique

A favourite of celebrities, Vive Cake Boutique has incorporated a Mother’s Day mainstay – fresh flowers – into two new cakes this year.

An ode to Mother Nature, the blush-coloured “As Sweet As Mama” cake (HK$880) is adorned with a chocolate silhouette of the Earth goddess and a cascading stream of flowers.

The 5-inch (12.5cm) cake comes in three flavour combinations: vanilla sponge with mango and yuzu mousse, earl grey cake with earl grey cream cheese, and rich chocolate cake with chocolate ganache.

Meanwhile, the blooming “Love You Bunches” cake (HK$1,080) could be a table centrepiece. Topped with pink and white flowers, the cake (4 inches by 3 inches) is available in rich chocolate or red velvet cream cheese versions.

Available until May 31 on Vive Cake Boutique’s website. Three-day advance order is recommended.
