There is only one word to describe this summer in Hong Kong, and that is sweltering if the forecasters are right. So if you are looking for somewhere to dodge the heat, here are some new restaurants to try this month.

Ship Street in Wan Chai has welcomed new modern Chinese and Japanese restaurants, and freshly minted mall The Southside in Wong Chuk Hang houses branches of two established restaurant chains.

If you’re looking for a quick getaway to Macau, there is also a new Japanese omakase sushi bar to try there.

1. Wakaran

This new, modern, East-meets-West diner in Wan Chai’s Ship Street serves fusion dishes created by chef Tommy Tsui. The menu features items such as potato crab millefeuille, where crispy potato pavé is topped with sweet mango salsa and fresh crabmeat, and truffle sesame doughnuts, inspired by Chinese jin dui (fried glutinous rice balls) are filled with mushrooms and topped with Comté cheese and shaved truffle.

More substantial dishes to share include whole smoked pigeon and baby squid lap cheong fried rice.

Another addition to Wan Chai’s Ship Street is Izakaya Nadagogo, helmed by chefs Shimoji Atsushi and Tsunenori Takahashi. The menu has three main themes: Tokyo and Hakata-style yakitori, robatayaki, and washoku.
