This month, a Japanese-Italian restaurant and a quirky legal-themed bar have opened in Central on Hong Kong Island, a Michelin-recommended eatery has popped up at the airport, and a new seafood dining concept has opened in Macau. Anima by Al Ché-cciano Lovers of Japanese-Italian cuisine can look forward to the opening of Anima by Al Ché-cciano in Central. This new concept, led by head chef Takahashi Kenji, brings the experience of the much-loved Al Ché-cciano restaurant in Japan to Hong Kong. The menu consists of the finest Japanese ingredients executed with expert Italian techniques, including bagna càuda (“hot bath”), a hot anchovy and garlic dipping sauce that comes with salad with which to dip, and seasonal pasta dishes. Led by Saan Dhakal and Ranjeet Khatri of Hong Kong bars Lockdown and Penicillin, Courtroom features an eclectic mix of cocktails including The Alimony, a twist on the classic martini, and Conditional Discharge, a savoury pizza-infused creation. Sun Moon Place Located in Wan Chai on the former site of Ship Kee (relocated, see below), Sun Moon Place offers a modern take on classic Beijing cuisine that highlights traditional flavours. The menu features dishes such as sliced pig’s knuckle and, of course, Peking duck, which blends crispy textures with bold flavours. The restaurant’s use of premium seasonal ingredients elevates classic recipes like sizzling mutton with spring onions, and preserved smoked chicken. Led by executive chef Henry Zhang Zhicheng, it offers premium seafood dishes that blend traditional Chinese techniques with innovative approaches from Southeast Asia. Zhang infuses Mao-tai – China’s most famous liquor – into dishes such as empurau fish steamed with soy sauce and red-spotted grouper with pickled tomato, creating bold flavours that celebrate the essence of the sea. Drunken Fish also boasts the only Mao-tai bar in Macau, featuring nearly 100 varieties of the iconic alcohol . Wynn Macau, Rua Cidade de Sintra, Nape 5. Twins Liangpi Limited Those heading to the airport can look forward to a new Michelin-recommended eatery there – until October 30, anyway. Known for its authentic street food, Twins Liangpi Limited has specialities including its signature cold steamed noodles and its spicy chicken with rice. Onda Sheung Wan’s latest culinary hotspot brings the vibrant flavours of the Mediterranean to Hong Kong, with a special focus on seafood hand-picked by chef Sergio Landi. Landi blends tradition with innovation and showcases sustainability through thoughtful sourcing and dry-ageing techniques. Dishes such as the linguine with abalone and the spaghetti carbonara di mare give a seafood twist to Italian classics, while the pink prawns crudo highlights simple yet bold flavours. 69 Jervois Street, Sheung Wan 7. Curry Up Tokyo’s popular curry restaurant has landed in Hong Kong’s Repulse Bay, mirroring its Japanese counterpart with a simple, stylish interior and quirky design elements. The menu offers five curry options, including butter chicken and spicy beef, and diners can combine the curries for an off-menu flavour. Curry Up was founded by Japanese fashion designer Tomoaki Nagao, or Nigo, who is best known as the creator of streetwear brand A Bathing Ape and is the artistic director for Kenzo. In collaboration with Tokyo ramen chain Menya Fujishiro, it has introduced a tori paitan ramen series to Hong Kong. These rich, creamy chicken broths are paired with slow-cooked chicken breast and Hokkaido pork char siu. The restaurant’s dim sum selection is equally enticing, with items like beetroot dumplings, bamboo charcoal buns and spicy shrimp siu mai. Kikusan also offers grab-and-go breakfast and lunch options, including healthy salads and Japanese-style onigiri, making it a versatile spot for any time of day. Fans of the Cantonese offerings of the old Ship Kee can rest assured that the original chef line-up, led by Dee Lui, remains the same.
