May in Hong Kong is all about relaxed and casual restaurants serving comfort food and traditional fare, from Thai soup noodles and Japanese udon to marinated goose from a famed Taiwanese brand, as well as Singaporean-style chicken rice from a Lion City stalwart. Over in Macau, there is an exciting new food hall presenting trending names and restaurants. Read on to see which new places are set to tickle your palate this May. 1. Yakiniku Sho The latest addition to Central’s line-up of yakiniku, or Japanese grilled meat restaurants, specialises in tender Kuroge Wagyu beef. The restaurant features only two set menus priced at HK$790 (US$102) and HK$490 and offers full service – the staff help with the grilling. Mama Tiger Noodles The team behind the popular Wan Chai Italian restaurant Trattoria Felino are going off-piste with Mama Tiger Noodles, which brings the fiery flavours of Bangkok’s street food scene to Hong Kong. Headed by chef Thanit Changchai, formerly of Thong Smith in the Thai capital, the restaurant serves plenty of Thai-style noodles, including Wagyu boat noodles and khao soi, or coconut curry noodles topped with crispy egg noodles. Appetisers include fried chicken and modern-style larb jellyfish. The vibrant decor, which includes neon-lit tigers and Muay Thai-themed stools, evokes the buzz of a Bangkok night market. 12 Kau U Fong, Central 3. Gourmet Pavilion Wynn Palace in Macau has allocated a whole level within the hotel to gastronomy. Headlining the indoor food plaza is Hong Kong’s Indian cuisine stalwart Leela by chef Manav Tuli, as well as Fat Boy Dumplings by chef Henry Zhang Zhicheng of Drunken Fish and Golden Flower fame, his first foray into casual dining in Macau. There are over a dozen offerings in the plaza, including Sushi Masa, Unagi Yondaime Kikukawa and Michelin-recommended concepts such as Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice and Yong Zuo Fish Congee. Boon Tong Kee A specialist in Singapore’s famed chicken rice, Boon Tong Kee has landed in Causeway Bay. The chain, which started as a street stall in 1979, now has over half a dozen locations in Singapore, Taiwan and the Philippines. Diners can look forward to ordering chicken and fragrant chicken oil rice, as well as crispy chicken and prawn toast. MD Cafe “Demon Chef” Alvin Leung has opened a modern cha chaan teng-style restaurant in Tsim Sha Tsui in Kowloon, putting a twist on Hong Kong diner favourites. Primo Posto You know a destination is evolving in its culinary offerings when there are venues peddling regional specialities and not just restaurants representing an entire country’s cuisine. Enter Posto Primo in Central, set to represent Milanese cuisine. A Cheng Goose Popular Taiwanese goose restaurant A Cheng Goose has opened a branch in Hong Kong’s Kowloon Bay district. Sink your teeth into brined or tea-smoked goose, as well as cold dishes such as honey yuzu bitter gourd salad and pork floss tofu. Jean-Pierre A French bistro has opened on Bridges Street in Central, offering a classic selection of dishes in a traditional setting. Look forward to steak tartare, French onion soup and beef bourguignon, and dessert items such as baba au Rhum – a rum-soaked cake. The offerings at the bar are classics with a twist, such as a Chambord margarita and a cornichon martini. 9 Bridges Street, Central 9. Marugame Udon Popular Japanese udon restaurant chain Marugame Udon, known as Marugame Seimen in Japan, has opened in Sha Tin. The Sha Tin location is the brand’s fourth in Hong Kong that features a “noodle factory” where diners can watch the noodle-making process from kneading and ageing the dough to cutting and cooking. Each location makes up to 1,000 bowls of Sanuki udon, a style of noodle from Japan’s Kagawa region, each day. Headed by Ho Lee Fook’s ArChan Chan and her trusted chefs, this spot is a great gathering place for lovers of crispy chicken wings, delicious skewers and wok-fried small plates. 52-56 Staunton Street, Central Looking further ahead: Montana Two of the world’s best bartenders are partnering to open a Cuban-themed bar in Hong Kong. Lorenzo Antinori of Bar Leone – voted Asia’s Best Bar in 2024 and runner-up in the world edition of the awards a few months later – and Simone Caporale of Barcelona bar Sips, No 3 on the World’s Best Bar 2024 list, say the drinks list will focus on tropical drinks like daiquiris and mojitos, with a twist. Given the popularity that Bar Leone has garnered, this will be one of the most anticipated bar openings this summer.
