Rich pastries filled with sweet or savoury fillings, mooncakes are the culinary star of the Mid-Autumn Festival, the Chinese festival held on the 15th day of the eighth lunar month to mark the end of the autumn harvest.
This year, the festival, which dates back more than 3,000 years, will fall on October 6.
Mooncakes – named for their shape, reminiscent of a full moon – symbolise prosperity and gratitude and are best sliced and shared among family members and friends.
As usual, this year Hong Kong hotels are offering a delicious variety of mooncakes, with early-bird discounts and special gift sets available. Here is a look at what is on offer.
1. Shang Palace at Kowloon Shangri-La
Shang Palace’s Halal Moonlight Treasures gift box (HK$478) features mooncakes made with halal ingredients.
There is a vegetarian mooncake set too, including four mini red date paste and pine nut mooncakes and four mini assorted nuts and dried fig mooncakes (HK$438).
Durian fans can indulge in sets that feature one of two types of the “king of fruits”: buttery Musang King and the bittersweet Black Thorn (six pieces/HK$538). In both sets, the fruit is encased in chewy snow skin. Serve them chilled to enhance the fruit’s natural creaminess.
Buy your mooncakes and gift sets before August 24 and enjoy an early-bird discount of up to 25 per cent.

2. Cuisine Cuisine at The Mira
Michelin-recommended Cuisine Cuisine’s mooncake collection includes white lotus seed purée mooncakes with double yolk, lava egg custard mini mooncakes, and egg custard mini mooncakes (eight pieces, HK$508/early bird HK$328 until August 31).
New additions this year include mini momoyama mooncakes in three flavours: pistachio, coffee and sea salt lemon curd.

3. T’ang Court at The Langham

Three-Michelin-star T’ang Court is offering its signature classic mini custard with egg yolk mooncakes (six pieces/HK$328) and its white lotus seed paste with double egg yolks mooncakes (four pieces/HK$348).
Early-bird discounts run until September 7. Some sets come in an elegant jewellery box with embroidered birds and flowers.

4. Mandarin Oriental The Landmark

The hotel’s six velvety mini egg custard mooncakes come in an elegant box that transforms into a festive lantern with a battery-powered light. The set (HK$498) is available via the hotel’s online shop until October 6.
Those wanting to buy their mooncakes in person can do so at the hotel’s restaurants, Amber and Somm. They are also available at LMO Freshly Baked Landmark Atrium from August 4 to September 30, and on the hotel’s seventh floor from October 1 to 6.

5. Spring Moon at The Peninsula

The Peninsula Hong Kong’s Michelin-star Cantonese restaurant Spring Moon is offering crisp and golden-crusted mini custard mooncakes (eight pieces/HK$668) and mini heart-shaped egg custard mooncakes (eight pieces/HK$688).

6. Yat Tung Heen at Eaton HK

One-Michelin-star Yat Tung Heen’s early-bird period, during which customers can enjoy 30 per cent off mooncakes, runs until September 30.
The deluxe mini mooncake assortment gift set (HK$408/early bird HK$268) features two mini lava egg custard mooncakes, two mini lava egg custard white lotus seed paste mooncakes, and two mini red bean paste with mandarin peel mooncakes.
You can also opt for the mini lava egg custard mooncake gift set (HK$398/early bird HK$258).

7. Rùn at The St Regis

Order before August 17 to enjoy the early-bird mooncake deals at two-Michelin-star Rùn.
One set comprises white lotus seed paste mooncakes with double egg yolks (four pieces HK$598/early bird HK$508.30).
For a more modern twist, try the mini date paste mooncakes with pine nuts, or mini Chinese ham with assorted nuts variety (both six pieces HK$538/early bird HK$457.30).

8. Ming Pavilion at Island Shangri-La

Tea lovers will be pleased to learn of Ming Pavilion’s tea mooncake collection (six pieces/HK$418), which features earthy da hong pao oolong mooncakes, jasmine tea mooncakes with soft floral notes, and warm and toasty hojicha mooncakes.
The pistachio mooncake set (six pieces/HK$418) includes three mini pistachio crunch mooncakes and three mini pistachio and cranberry mooncakes.
Box sets are available for order until October 4, and are available for pickup or delivery from September 25 to October 4 at Island Shangri-La.

9. Man Ho at JW Marriott

One-Michelin-star Man Ho Chinese Restaurant is offering white lotus seed paste mooncakes with ginger and double egg yolks gift box (four pieces HK$498/early bird HK$398.40). Enjoy a 20 per cent early bird discount when you order on or before August 15.
Mooncakes are available for pickup at Man Ho Chinese Restaurant between 12pm and 9pm from September 16 to October 5.

10. Yue at Sheraton Hong Kong Tung Chung

Yue’s Lantau Moonlight mooncake sets return to the Sheraton Hong Kong Tung Chung.
Choose between mini egg custard mooncakes (six pieces per box) and traditional mini white lotus seed paste with salted egg yolk mooncakes (six pieces per box). You can also opt for an assortment of the two.
Each box is regularly priced at HK$388, but will cost HK$271.60 during the early-bird period until August 24, and HK$310.40 from August 25 to September 21.

11. Lung King Heen at the Four Seasons

Two-Michelin-star Lung King Heen celebrates its 20th anniversary with a new flavour: white lotus seed paste mooncakes with osmanthus and salted egg yolk.
Early-bird offers are available until August 31 with savings of up to 25 per cent for bulk orders.
