As summer officially makes way for autumn in Hong Kong, September sees a number of new restaurants opening – from celebrity bartender concepts to cool, casual eateries serving up dishes like beef noodles and lasagna.
Read on to see which places are worth checking out this month.
1. Nocino
Nocino is celebrating its fourth opening in the city, this time on Hollywood Road in Central.
The local restaurant brand celebrates the rustic, homestyle cuisine of the Ticino region in southern Switzerland – think Alpine peaks, medieval castles and lakes lined with cliffside caves.
Nocino quickly became a favourite after opening its first location in Tai Hang in 2022, with diners drawn to its intimate atmosphere and culinary style.
Some of the most popular dishes include the Wagyu beef tartare, the signature Malakoff fritters, and fresh pasta plates like the veal shin ragu and preserved walnuts with pappardelle and the brown crab cacio e pepe bucatini.

2. Thonglor

Thonglor, a recent addition to Kowloon City – Hong Kong’s “Little Thailand” – offers authentic Bangkok street food from its bustling corner location.
Led by chef Henry Pattanin Leung, a Thai native whose culinary journey began as a teen waiter, the restaurant knows what the locals want – an authentic selection of nostalgic favourites.
Its main philosophy is to honour the classics with a heavy focus on classic Thai spices, herbs and aromatics.
Some highlights include the Wagyu beef boat noodles, the softshell crab and meat egg curry, and the tom yum soup pot.

3. The Doctor’s Residence by Dr Fern

After Dr Fern’s Gin Parlour closed earlier this year, the doctor has found a new space to practise at, in The Pottinger Hotel in Central.
The Doctor’s Residence by Dr Fern “treats” its patients with personalised drinks made from fresh, local herbs and botanicals. The theme for the space is retro-chic, complete with lava lamps, vintage furnishings and a terrace that opens into alfresco seating.
The bar maintains its focus on gin, boasting a selection of more than 400 bottles that include rare blue labels, combined with unexpected ingredients such as squid, bacon, jellyfish and pickled watermelon rind.
To pair, it offers bites like crispy lotus chips, salmon roe on brioche, and corn croquettes.

4. Dragons’ Den

From the team that brought you Man Yuen Restaurant comes Dragons’ Den, which reopens in the same spot with minor changes and an updated interior.
Diners can look forward to top-notch roast meat items such as char siu and roast pigeon, hotpot, and a steadfast line-up of dim sum.

5. La Volta

Roland Schuller, the chef who helped Hong Kong’s Octavium Italian Restaurant gain Michelin stars, has partnered with veteran restaurateur Jeffrey Miu to open La Volta.
The eatery promises to deliver high-quality pastas and Italian dishes at wallet-friendly prices.
Try the house-made gnocchi, egg ravioli or the mafaldine pasta coated in fresh broccolini pesto, and sink your teeth into bites such as burrata and truffle honey bruschetta.

6. Jus
This fancy offshoot of Big JJ Seafood Hotpot specialises in just a few bowls: beef noodles and one vegetarian noodle.
The signature noodles are mixed with a special base of butter, beef broth and, of course, beef jus. There is also a dan dan noodle version to try.
The selection of toppings is what makes the difference, with choices such as beef char siu, ox tongue and beef tendon – this one is for lovers of red meat.

7. Mius

In 2019, Shelley Tai became the Diageo World Class HK & Macau Bartender of the Year. Soon after, she moved to Singapore to become the bar manager at the award-winning Nutmeg & Clove and helped open its sister bar, Last Word, in 2022.
Now, Tai – famed for her creativity in infusing local flavours into complex cocktails – has returned to Hong Kong to open a bar in her hometown.
Guests can look forward to creations such as Fig Ol’ Days – a Scotch whisky cocktail with fino sherry, fig leaf and a hint of palo santo – and the Gin & Apple, which is made with coconut, makrut lime, lemongrass and house-made green apple soda.

8. Sugar King
Tucked away in Peel Street is a new bar from award-winning bartender John Nugent, the man behind The Diplomat and Cardinal Point.
Boasting the vibe of a bodeguita, or a “little shop” in Cuba, the bar will offer lively music as well as a mean daiquiri and treats including a creamy flan.

9. The Mushroom

Nestled on the seventh floor of Central’s California Tower, The Mushroom is a sophisticated new destination for modern Yunnan cuisine.
It introduces diners to the rich culinary traditions of Yunnan’s ethnic groups, from the bold spices of the Wa people to the refreshing, complex flavours of the Dai.
Signature dishes include the fried white boletus with qiubei dry red pepper, a local favourite that combines wild mushrooms and aromatic peppers; and stir-fried tiger’s paw mushroom, a wok-fried dish with ham and bean sprouts.

10. O’rm

Tucked away where Japanese restaurant Ronin formerly stood, new intimate eatery O’rm offers a refined and contemporary take on Korean cuisine.
With only around 20 seats and no reservations, the space blends trendy vibes with authentic flavours.
Diners can order modern interpretations of Korean classics like yukhoe – raw meat – with Wagyu and caviar, kumquat salad, and mini crab kimbap.

11. The Lasagna Factory
A lasagna speciality shop? Yes please.
Pasta is made fresh on the premises at The Lasagna Factory, and there are also other classic Italian dishes available, such as chicken Parmesan and meatballs.
Not a meat lover? No worries, there are also variations like crab and mushroom on the menu.

12. Momi & Toys
Japan’s famed crêperie has opened an offshoot in Tai Koo.
Patrons can sink their teeth into light, thin and chewy crêpes filled to the brim with luxurious ice cream fillings, cream and fruit.
Do not forget to try the signature crème brûlée flavour.

13. Gaga Macau

Gaga, a popular Chinese restaurant chain, has opened its first non-mainland location, in Macau.
Founded in Shenzhen in 2010, the chain has long been seen as a lifestyle brand that blends art, nature and wellness.
Its food revolves around the same restorative approach, using dining as an outlet from the bustle of city life.
The menu embodies the brand’s catchphrase, “All-Day Chill”, and is curated to have that breezy and refreshing concept.
Aside from long-standing favourites like its brunch and salad options, dishes exclusive to the Macau branch feature specials such as shrimp paste seafood pasta and serradura cake.
