Five tips to reduce your risk of skin cancer

The Hong Kong Cancer Fund has some advice for sunseekers.

Non-melanoma skin cancer is the seventh most common cancer in Hong Kong, with the number of new cases rising each year, according to the Hospital Authority's cancer statistics in 2012.

Reduce your risk of skin cancer by protecting yourself from the sun with these tips from the Hong Kong Cancer Fund's SunSmart campaign. Whether it's cloudy or sunny, remember to "slop, slip, slap, slide and seek".

on some sunscreen - apply sunscreen 15 to 30 minutes before you go outside, reapply often (especially when sweating or swimming) and always use a high factor (SPF 30 to 50+) water-resistant sunscreen.

on a shirt - choose clothing with collars and long sleeves.

on a hat - always wear a wide-brimmed hat when you are outside that provides shade to the face, neck, ears and head.

on some good-quality sunglasses - wear close fitting, wrap-around UV protected sunglasses.

some shade - bring an umbrella. or stay in the shade if possible.
