“I am afraid that one day, people will not listen to K-pop any more.”

These are the words of Park Ji-won, the chief executive of K-pop entertainment company Hybe, on the possible downfall of the musical genre.

K-pop exploded in popularity during the Covid-19 pandemic. According to the Korea Customs Service, the total value of K-pop album exports was US$231.4 million (301 billion won) in 2022. It is the highest figure ever and a more than threefold increase compared to 2019, when the total value of album exports was US$74.6 million.
