Hong Kong’s best-kept secrets: Mum’s Not Home - bric-a-brac with love
Upstairs space in Yau Ma Tei is a hangout where you can browse knick-knacks from near and far, buy clothes, eat, and watch live music - but most of all chat with its globetrotting minimalist owners

With plenty of space, a forest of plants and clothes and knick-knacks from local designers, Mum’s Not Home is a great place to browse and hang out.
An upstairs shop in Shanghai Street, Yau Ma Tei, Mum’s Not Home was opened six months ago by a couple who travel around the world to collect interesting bric-a-brac for sale. Fashion designer Chow Kong-chuen and his partner Makui Ma quit their jobs to open the shop.

They often host local indie bands to perform low-key sets in the store, and caused a stir among Mayday fans when the Taiwanese alternative rock band visited them in October 2015.
Drinks and cakes are served there, and they’ll even cut your hair, for HK$50. But what visitors enjoy most are the two friendly owners of the shop, who share their minimalist globetrotting way of life with anyone who sits down for a chat.
