Universal Studios Beijing, set to open next year as the fifth Universal Studios-branded theme park in the world, will boast features not found in the four other parks under the brand, its general manager says. It will be the largest of all the Universal theme parks.

Among the offerings exclusive to the Chinese park will be a zone dedicated to hit film franchise Transformers as well as one based on the sprawling ancient Chinese town from animated feature Kung Fu Panda.

Details about the seven themed zones were revealed last month in Beijing. Tom Mehrmann, president and general manager at Universal Studios Beijing Park and Resort, said trial runs would be held at the park in the spring.

Since the start of the project, “over 100,000 contractors, more than 500 designers and artists” had been involved in its construction, said Mehrmann, who was the chief executive of Hong Kong’s Ocean Park theme park for 13 years and wrote a book about it, published in 2018, called: Taming the Mouse: How a Small Hong Kong Theme Park Came to Dominate Disney.

A Universal Studios spokesman said construction of the park had not been delayed by the Covid-19 outbreak, and workers had been able to carry on throughout the year.
