Launching this summer is Eton's BoostSolar (HK$788), a two-part charger that's capable of completely refuelling an iPhone or iPad mini twice over. The BoostSolar adds a much-needed 2.1 amp USB port, too, which is powerful enough to replenish a tablet. Manufactured in green and black and sporting a splash-proof exterior, it includes standard USB and microUSB.

Charging up your gadgets by harnessing the power of the sun is great, but where to put all those electronics? With a padded 17-inch laptop sleeve and a dedicated pouch for a smartphone - and plenty more pockets besides - the OffGrid Solar Backpack (HK$1,800) wears its two 2W solar panels on the outside. Waterproof and removable, those panels soak up enough sun in five hours for its USB battery to fully charge a typical smartphone, although it's best to start out with that battery fully charged from the mains.

Designed for occasions when running out of batteries just isn't an option, the Goal Zero Yeti 1250 (HK$14,000) solar generator stores an incredible 150W of power - that's enough to recharge a laptop 20 times over. It can be recharged via USB or DC power inside 15 hours, but it's hard to resist the optional photovoltaic panel that refuels the unit in 20 hours. At 54kg, it's best stored in the boot of a car.
