Bar review: Tivo is buzzing everyday in Kennedy Town

The vibe: part of the Aqua group, Tivo shares a name with its older sibling on Wyndham Street, but that's where the family resemblance ends. The newer branch's vibe is relaxed New York shabby chic.

Its windows, fringed with red wet market lights, open to the view of the Praya and Holland Streets, providing this end of Kennedy Town with its first hit of nightlife. Sit by the street and enjoy watching runners and tai chi enthusiasts milling around Belcher Park.

While the wine list is extensive — 13 reds, 14 whites, and two rosés — we're curious about the cocktails. The Praya Cooler (HK$88) is a spiky little hedgehog of a white sangria with chopped pear, star fruit, peach and grapes spouting from the glass. Extremely drinkable and then even more eatable. Next up was the Tivopolitan (HK$88), a Cosmopolitan with watermelon instead of strawberry, a refreshing option for the humid summer months.

But the crown in Tivo's jewel must be the Aquatini (HK$138) — a vodka, blackcurrant and lychee concoction, served in a martini glass lined with edible gold leaf. The strawberry plopped in our prosecco (HK$78) was a welcome summer twist. Tivo also does "social dining" (a fancy name for eating Western food the Chinese way) — we'd recommend snacking on some Brussels sprouts (HK$98) or the river prawns (HK$98), fresh from the Shek Tong Tsui wet market.
