Philips BR-1X 
	Packed with wOOx loudspeaker tech with special sound modes for indoors or outdoors, the rugged rubber Philips BR-1X (HK$699, Foresoon, 20 Sheung Yuet Road, International Plaza, Kowloon Bay, foresoon.com.hk allows hands-free calling and has a built-in rechargeable battery that lasts about six hours. Though it links to a smartphone via Bluetooth, the 500g BR-1X has a 3.5mm stereo jack for hooking up any device that doesn't have Bluetooth. Multiple units can be daisy-chained to create a bigger, yet volume-synchronised sound.
 
 
 

Braven BRV-1
	Great for poolside music, the Braven BRV-1 (HK$1,398, at Apple stores, store.apple.com/hk) can't be dunked underwater, but it can take a splash or two. Completely weatherproof, the 890g BRV-1's subwoofers offer the kind of bass you'll never hear from smartphones. With a 3.5mm stereo jack and a built-in mic for hands-free calls, the BRV-1's battery charges via microUSB and is good for about 12 hours.

	This is the ideal Bluetooth speaker for day trips and picnics. Offering 12 hours of music playback from a single charge, the 450g Edifier Extreme Connect (HK$638, Sky Earth, Mong Kok Computer Centre, 8 Nelson Street, Mong Kok, tel: 21560381) links to mobile devices via Bluetooth, but has a unique hard media option; a card slot on its side accepts the miniSD and microSD cards found in Android smartphones. A microphone allows hands-free and conference calling, too.
