GoPro Hero4
The most famous, and the most future-proof. Little bigger than a matchbox, the waterproof GoPro Hero4 (HK$3,450, foresoon.com.hk) can film not only in Ultra HD 4k resolution (that’s about eight times the quality most TVs can show) at a smooth-looking 30 frames per second, but also in regular HD at a stunning 120 frames per second. Cue slowmo footage at a quarter-speed as well as time-lapse video and eight megapixel still photos, which is rare for a camcorder. Equipped with Wi-fi and Bluetooth, the GoPro Hero4’s results can be viewed on a free GoPro smartphone app. Battery life is between one and two hours.

Sony Action Cam AS100V
Looking more like a traditional camcorder than GoPro’s box-like design, the black or white Sony AS100V (HK$2,680, trippro.com.hk) offers a unique feature; built-in GPS. As well as tagging your recordings by location, it’s got Wi-fi and NFC for pairing with Android devices, a micro HDMI slot for outputting direct to a HDTV, and a slightly longer battery life than the GoPro, at more than two hours. It can’t produce 4k video, instead maxing-out at Full HD, but it does offer an ultra-high quality recording mode which doubles the data rate. Although only splash-proof out of the box, a waterproof casing is available.
