Wedged on the ground floor of Hong Kong’s Standard Chartered Bank Building is Odds. You enter through a lounge space and walk on through the sliding doors at the back, which gets you to the dining area with a sushi bar on the left and a teppanyaki counter on the right. The concept is odd to say the least and we’re here to find out if this motley crew of ideas work together. We begin the meal with some creative starters such as the smoked fatty tuna in Shikoku egg and soy sauce (HK$428), and fatty tuna and Wagyu tartare with caviar (HK$400), which is served on Japanese cod wafers, adding even more decadence to the luxurious mix of ingredients. We also enjoyed the pâté and persimmon monaka (HK$128) which is a slice of foie gras sandwiched in a wafer shell. Talking about the hot dishes, crunchy skinned amadai fish (HK$320) is presented in a bowl of herby broth that is a fabulous pairing of textures and flavours. Odds holds true to the tradition of yakitori where the whole chicken is utilised. We were served chicken comb, oesophagus, palm and tail – and each was an exploration of textures, delicately marinated to showcase the best the cut had to offer. We end the evening with a bang and with a steaming pot of Miyazaki Wagyu beef, sea urchin rice in pot (HK$1,688) where the melt-in-your-mouth beef was sweetened by the uni and we couldn’t help but chow down the rice. We do not have anything to complain about at Odds. For a place that does a bit everything, it does it all well. Odds, Shop G2, Standard Chartered Bank Building, 4-4A Des Voeux Road, Central, 2891 3988
