The Dictator: on style, she rules

Why you can trust SCMP
Sofia Suarez

Cherry on Top, MacDonnell Road

The Dictator rules: You are not Anna Dello Russo. Sorry to state the obvious, but she can pull off her eccentric looks because, well, they're hers. Google the editor-at-large and creative consultant for Vogue Japan (or go to www.annadellorusso.com and you're guaranteed a visual onslaught of feathers, gold, colour, outlandish accessories and attention-grabbing Fashion, with a capital "F". If you really want to mimic her style, sit tight for the October 4 launch of her H&M accessories collection. The cherry fascinator is by Piers Atkinson. The son of a theatrical milliner, the British designer tried his hand at graphic design, photography, art direction and PR before launching his hat collection in February 2008. Atkinson's creations have adorned the heads of Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Paloma Faith and members of the British royal family. And, yes, you can wear one, too: the hats (HK$5,500 to HK$7,500) are now available at Joyce (Pacific Place, Admiralty, tel: 2523 5944). I'm not sure where you think you're going with a giant wrapped sweet atop your noggin, but it could be fabulous. A recent collaboration with Asos.com means you can also get more affordable Piers Atkinson hats, such as the mini yellow leather smiley face pillbox (HK$473).

I've never really seen the point of make-up primers but they tell me they've got some amazing new ones that can make you look younger?

Who are "they" and do "they" live in your head? (Stop listening if suggestions take on a more violent nature.) Have you ever applied foundation over sunscreen and noticed a difference? Primer has a similar effect, but better. The right primer could reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, make for smoother make-up application and even get it to stay on longer. Prime Time Foundation Primer by Bare Minerals promises to brighten, smooth, battle flaky skin and uneven texture, and minimise pores, and comes in three types: original, oil control and brightening (HK$200 each; Faces, Harbour City, Tsim Sha Tsui, tel: 2376 3766). Giorgio Armani Beauty makes the excellent Luminessence, a priming lotion that tackles dark spots as it hydrates, smoothes and evens skin tone, and gives a hint of a pearly shimmer (HK$450; Elements, 1 Austin Road West, Kowloon, tel: 2196 8261). Benefit's Porefessional is an oil-free, pore-reducing balm that also works on fine lines and contains vitamin E (HK$300; Faces, tel: 2110 3495). At Watsons (customer service hotline: 2608 8383) and the like, try Revlon's Photoready Color Correcting Primer, which comes in three tones (HK$128 each), or Gosh's Velvet Touch Foundation Primer with Anti Wrinkle Matrixyl 3000 (HK$198).
