I’ve been using Kiehl’s Creative Cream Wax, but it’s apparently discontinued. I did try to search online for alternatives, but every reviewer comes to the same conclusion as me. It’s a great product unlike any other. Or is it? What else should I try? I’ve got a pretty normal haircut, nothing too fancy, more natural, non-greasy.
Mr Dapper: I believe, sir, you have unwittingly named your solution. Although Creative Cream Wax “Super Hold for Sculpting and Distorting” by Kiehl’s is no longer available in Hong Kong, it is still sold in other markets. Kiehls.com will not ship it to the SAR and amazon.com is out of stock, however nordstrom.com (HK$133 per tub plus a hefty HK$243 delivery fee) and saksfifthavenue.com (HK$139 for the product and HK$192 for delivery) are amenable to shipping to you.
Mr Dandy: Why fork out for shipping costs when Hong Kong is overflowing with great styling products for guys? I’d start by asking my hair stylist for a recommendation. Otherwise, read the label to look for key words. In your case, that’s “non-greasy” (it uses silk powder), “moulding” and “texture”. Try testers before you buy, like I did. I found three that have the same cream/wax feel. First, Schwarzkopf’s Essensity Texturising Mud promises remouldable control with a dry, non-greasy finish (HK$299; Senda Salon, 3 Leighton Road, Causeway Bay, tel: 2832 9422). Next, Redken’s Maneuver Working Wax for men says all the right things: “moldable texture, natural looking finish” (HK$196; www.strawberrynet.com). Third, there’s Aveda’s Pure- Formance Grooming Clay (HK$280; The Landmark, Central, tel: 2737 3026), which gives a natural, matte finish with lightweight microfibres. Be warned, though. Its strong, yummy scent screams Aveda.
My wife has these flowery perfumed sheets in her drawers that she says are only for women. Is that right, or could I have a good-smelling drawer of socks, too (before I wear them at least!)?
Mr Dandy: No way! Tell your lady she can’t have all the fun, ‘cause there are scented drawer liners out there for guys. Those flowery Crabtree & Evelyn Drawer Liners also come in scents that are totally cool for guys, such as the old cologne staple, lavender (HK$245 for six sheets). Castelbel’s Fragranced Drawer Liners collection includes a lavender fragrance infused into paper with images inspired by Portugal’s landscapes and flora (HK$140 for six sheets; ferriswheelsandcarousels.
com). Or up the notes with the Lavender Rosemary Drawer Liners by Michel Design Works (HK$116 for six; ferriswheelsandcarousels.com). OK, so some of them have girly patterns on them. Guess what? The backs are all white. Flip them! The fragrance will still come through.
