While most chambray is more lightweight than denim, that is not always the case. It is most commonly used for summer shirts, Bermuda shorts and such. Chambray is a plain weave while denim is a twill. Inspect the back of the fabric. Typically, denim will be darker on one side and lighter on the other. Chambray will appear similar on both sides.
