Well, it is not for me to comment on your level of knowledge (or lack thereof). However, I believe I can be of some assistance. While most chambray is more lightweight than denim, that is not always the case. It is most commonly used for summer shirts, Bermuda shorts and such. Chambray is a plain weave while denim is a twill. Inspect the back of the fabric. Typically, denim will be darker on one side and lighter on the other. Chambray will appear similar on both sides.

Sorry, I nodded off there for a second. Anyway, the point is that, yes, they are different, but each is fantastic in its own way. Uniqlo has some pretty cool long-sleeve shirts with double-breast pockets and white contrast stitching in light grey, light blue or darker blue chambray (HK$199). At the other end of the spectrum, you can't get much fancier than Loro Piana, which has used the fabric for everything from luxe swim shorts (HK$2,730) to natty shirts (HK$2,995 and up). Dapper's mention of Bermudas is actually genius. They're light, good-looking even when they're wrinkled, and travel well. Get yourself a pair from Rag & Bone (HK$2,200), Carven (HK$2,600) or Apolis (HK$998; www.eastdane.com)

It's hard to find these days because it seems to have been discontinued. And though you can probably find the dregs of stock on sites such as ebay.com you should start looking for an alternative. The Art of Shaving does an amazing range of everything you could need for a fantastic shave, including the Pre-Shave Oil (HK$197.90; www.yesstyle.com.hk If you're as obsessed by the way things smell as I am, then you'll love Aesop's Moroccan Neroli Shaving Serum (HK$280). Lab Series has long been doing this sort of stuff, including the Electric Shave Solution (HK$220), which is formulated specifically for your mug and little machine to work in harmony. Also, keep in mind for your next trip that Boots still sells its own brand Pre-Electric Shave in Britain (about HK$36).

I am always fascinated by the sheer number of inquiries about pre-shave products we receive. The truth is, nothing trumps a good wet shave, preferably by a competent barber. Still, should one prefer the convenience of an electric shaver, there are multiple treatments to ensure better results. The concept involves creating a protective barrier for the skin while also preparing the follicles for the razor. Try the Gentlemen's Tonic's babassu bergamot pre-shave oil (HK$260; 43 Wellington Street, Central, tel: 2525 2455); or the Truefitt & Hill shaving oil (HK$410; The Mandarin Barber, Mandarin Oriental, 5 Connaught Road, Central, tel: 2825 4088).
