Low Rent, Happy Valley

You've suddenly "found yourself" at balls - like you were sleep walking or accidentally stumbled into parties, repeatedly? Impossible! Attendance at such events is planned in advance. Renting will require forward thinking, too - about the dress, delivery, return and contingencies for a bad fit, as well as hair, jewellery, bag and shoes. A good place to start is yeechoo.com. Named after the Putonghua word for wardrobe, it was founded by friends Abby Zhang and Shan Shan, who were looking for a similar service. Browse by delivery date, rental price, colour, length and/or size to find the dress you want. Along with the four-day rental cost, you'll see the original retail price. The dress can be couriered to you on the same day, if you place the order before 12pm. Finally, the company will pick up, inspect and dry-clean the dress. If you were to look for a long dress today, for example, your choices would include designs by Halston Heritage (HK$880 to HK$1,600), Alice & Olivia (HK$540 to HK$1,180), Vera Wang (HK$1,800) and Jason Wu (HK$2,800). For accessories, there's luxtnt.com, which functions similarly. There, you have your choice of bags, jewellery and hats/head wear by the top names in fashion. Bonus: If you're bored at the ball, you can try to guess which guests bought, borrowed or rented. Meow.

Newsflash! Adequate, quality sleep is important to many people, even those who travel in economy class and don't usually receive the comforting freebies you're whinging about. That's why there are multiple high-end eye-covering accoutrements sold in designer boutiques and many airport stores. If you want true luxury, Loro Piana has a whole travel set in light brown baby cashmere. The range includes a mask (HK$3,500), slippers (HK$7,400), neck pillow (HK$8,800) and a gorgeous travel blanket with suede piping (HK$21,500). Did you say cute? Well, Kate Spade definitely has that covered with the duchess satin Dream A Little Dream series of eye masks with black eyelashes (to mimic closed eyes, duh) or shaped like a bow (HK$400 each). G.O.D has the quirky, Chinese-inspired angle covered with its funny eye masks; I'm partial to the Opera Woman (HK$105) but you must also see the Hong Kong taxi "Out of Service" (HK$125) and panda with fluffy black ear muffs (HK$125) for what G.O.D calls "a total blackout".
