Hong Kong schoolchildren spend hours on electronic devices, according to a recent survey. While a return to reading books might seem like the stuff of fantasy novels, one person who is doing her bit to help kids go “old school” is newly minted children’s author Jessamy Woolley.

After quitting her corporate job in Britain and moving to Hong Kong in 2015, Woolley followed her passion for fitness – she works as a spinning instructor at the XYZ cycling studio, in Central – but it took a nudge from her husband to push her to achieve another ambition.

“I’d been talking about writing a kids’ book for so long that my husband gave me a sketchbook and said, ‘Get on with it,’” laughs Woolley when we meet in her Mid-Levels flat.

The result is Billy the Cavalier and Friends, a fun tale that stars Woolley’s three-year-old Cavalier King Charles spaniel.

“During walks up to Victoria Peak, Billy was so intrigued by the animals and insects, and kids were drawn to him. I’ve got a video of him chasing a butterfly, he didn’t want to hurt it but was captivated by it,” she says. “I thought there was a cute story in that.”
