Five minutes with Lily-Rose Depp: daughter of Johnny Depp and Vanessa Paradis on parents and privacy
The French-American actor, model and Chanel ambassador talks about upcoming film projects and dressing up in her mother’s designer clothes
What is the most important lesson you learned from your parents? “To keep my life as private as I can. My parents did a great job of giving me and my brother the most private upbringing we could have, so to value your private life and to keep it for yourself has always been important to me.”
You were raised in France and the United States. What do you find most appealing about the two cultures? “I feel connected to both places. There are aspects of my personality that are very French and others that are very American. I’m influenced by both because I spend a lot of time in these places.”
You’ve done some acting recently. Can you tell us about your upcoming projects? “The King [starring Lily-Rose Depp’s current boyfriend, Timothée Chalamet, as Henry V] is coming out this fall and then there is Dreamland [whose cast includes Armie Hammer and Gary Oldman], which I will go and shoot in Romania this summer. Nothing makes me feel as liberated as acting.”
Are there any actors or entertainers you’ve always admired? “There are so many great actors I’ve always looked up to. I can’t name them all, but my mother has always been a great model for me, for the kind of woman I want to be and the way I want to live my life.”
How has it been to follow in your mother’s footsteps and become a Chanel ambassador? “My first memory of Chanel is from my mom, rummaging through her closet when I was little and walking around in her Chanel pumps and bags and dresses. I have such a great relationship with everyone who works at Chanel. It feels like a family.”
