Why Cate Blanchett is raiding her closet for red-carpet looks – ‘it’s chic to repeat’

Australian actress Cate Blanchett made quite a fashion statement at this month’s 2020 Venice Film Festival, the first – socially distanced – international film festival during the coronavirus pandemic.

For most of her red-carpet appearances, Blanchett, the president of the festival jury, chose to “shop her closet” by wearing previously worn pieces in an effort to highlight the importance of sustainability.

“It’s chic to repeat,” said her stylist, Elizabeth Stewart, on Instagram. “When planning for any important event, make sure to look in your own closet first! Clothes are meant to be cherished and worn again and again. Even if you are a world-famous actress.”

The Alexander McQueen embroidered top that she wore at the festival was altered from a gown she first sported in London in 2016. She paired the top with black trousers, for a less formal look but one still worthy of the red carpet.

The Esteban Cortazar midnight blue dress that she chose for the opening ceremony of the festival was a throwback to 2015, when Blanchett first wore it to a premiere in London.

Finally, for the premiere of Wife of a Spy, Blanchett, a long-time fan of designer Giorgio Armani, wore a black Armani Privé gown (left) that she had originally worn at the Cannes Film Festival in 2015.
