Yi Zhou is one of those rare people who seems able to do anything. A multimedia artist whose work has been shown at the Venice Biennale, a filmmaker whose short films have been screened at Sundance and Cannes, a collaborator sought after by Chanel and a model gracing the pages of Vogue . And this envy-inducing polymath is all of 32 years old. Born in Shanghai, Zhou moved to Rome at eight, later studied at the London School of Economics, started her art career in Paris, and was based in Hong Kong in 2015. Now in Los Angeles, she is making strides in the fashion industry with Global Intuition, the gender-fluid brand she founded last year. With sustainability at its core, the label targets Gen Z and aims to bridge the gap between fashion, branding and philanthropy. “Global Intuition is all about slow fashion,” Zhou says by phone from LA. “The pieces are timeless and seasonless, released as drops without fashion shows – being sustainable is crucial.” The brand’s first collection, comprising jeans, T-shirts and trainers, debuted last year at West Hollywood boutique Fred Segal. This year, Zhou joined creative forces with Emanuele Filiberto of Savoy, the Prince of Venice, and launched Royal House of Savoy, a collection that fuses basics with high fashion. Filiberto, the only grandson of Italy’s last king, Umberto II, met Zhou when she was shooting a commercial with his wife, French actress Clotilde Courau. “We studied the rich history of the dynasty’s coat of arms and deconstructed it, creating a line of street/athleisure with the coat of arms as a logo,” says Zhou of the collaboration. “I love heritage brands so it was a perfect fit.” In 2013, while living in Shanghai, Zhou designed capsule collections for brands such as Iceberg, and was named art director of Tudou (now Youku Tudou, the Chinese version of YouTube) and ambassador for microblogging website Weibo. Today, however, her focus is on her first feature film, Stars and Scars , which she wrote and will be directing next year. She recently shot a three-minute teaser for the film that was commissioned by Australian director Phillip Noyce. The teaser has been selected for SF3, a short-film festival in Australia.
