From Seaspiracy to The Game Changers, 5 films loved by Andrea Richey, Hong Kong Shark Foundation’s executive director
- Hong Kong Shark Foundation executive director Andrea Richey picks her favourite films, all of which carry an environmental message
- These include documentary about overfishing Seaspiracy, and Eating Our Way to Extinction, which highlights the dangers of unsustainable agriculture

It is not surprising that Andrea Richey’s favourite films carry strong messages about the environment and animal welfare. She is, after all, known as the “Shark Lady” for her role as executive director of NGO the Hong Kong Shark Foundation.
Dressing up in a shark suit and speaking in classrooms and boardrooms around the city is a normal day for the American lawyer turned activist.
Raising awareness is much needed. Every year at least 100 million sharks are caught worldwide for their fins and other parts. And Hong Kong accounts for more than half of the world’s shark fin trade.
Much of Richey’s work involves educating people about how apex predators such as sharks play a crucial role in the marine food chain, a challenging mission considering how they have been vilified in the media and popular culture.
Take Steven Spielberg’s 1975 film Jaws, where the great white shark was depicted as a giant, bloodthirsty killing machine that terrorised beachgoers at a summer resort town.
