Hong Kong photographer and filmmaker Wing Shya is staying creative during the down time that comes with the coronavirus. He is relaxing, too.

“I’ve stopped travelling and I’m spending a lot of time at home, which has given me a chance to slow down, time to think – and time not to think,” says Wing, best known for his on-set stills of films such as Happy Together (1997), In the Mood for Love (2000) and 2046(2004), all directed by his frequent collaborator, Wong Kar-wai. “It’s helped me to calm down, to relax.”

The change of pace has also influenced his outlook. “The world has changed and so has my work. I’m seeing things from a different perspective – wider and more romantic,” he says, adding his latest project is a collaboration with Hong Kong composer Lam Fung.

Wing has many creative feathers in his cap. In 2010, he released his blockbuster debut feature film, Hot Summer Days. Love in Space followed the next year. His images have been exhibited globally, from London’s Victoria and Albert Museum to the Mori Art Museum in Tokyo, and published in magazines such as i-D and Vogue. His raw style captures feelings of both loneliness and togetherness, which resonate all the more as people struggle with isolation during the pandemic.
