Based on Cho Nam-joo’s autobiographical novel of the same name, feminist film Kim Ji-young, Born 1982, has topped the box office in Korea – and will premiere internationally at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on November 1

The controversial Korean movie Kim Ji-young, Born 1982 has topped the domestic box office in its opening days of release.

According to the Korean Film Council (KOFIC), it sold 291,155 tickets in its first two days in Korean cinemas, following its October 23 release.

The movie stars Jung Yu-mi, playing the protagonist Kim Ji-young, and Gong Yoo, who plays Ji-young’s husband Dae-hyun.

The movie depicts the story of Ji-young’s life in 2019, from the perspective of women of Ji-young’s generation, born in the 1980s. After Ji-young quits her job to raise her child, the movie deals with social issues including everyday gender discrimination.

The movie adaptation will premiere internationally at the Hong Kong Asian Film Festival on November 1, ahead of a local release date of November 7, before rolling out in Singapore from November 14, according to Imdb.
