The Bollywood actress is only 24, but has already appeared in the films Kedarnath and Simmba in 2018, has earned the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut and – as you probably already know – has two more films scheduled for release this year. Here are some things you probably don’t know about her yet.

1. She’s a royal

Sara Ali Khan is a member of one of India’s royal families, the Pataudi family. The family is an Indian dynasty, whose nabobs, or autonomous rulers, reigned over their princely states. The last ruling nabob ended his reign in 1948, but the descendants of the families continue to be rulers in name. Khan’s father, Saif Ali Khan, is the current nabob.

2. She’s well educated

Despite her royal background, Khan pursued traditional schooling. She attended Columbia University in New York City, where she studied history and political science. She graduated in under three years, instead of the typical four, and took the remaining time off to lose weight and get into shape. Speaking of which …

3. She has had a stunning transformation

As a teenager, Khan was diagnosed with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), a condition that makes it hard to lose weight. She used to weigh more than 200 pounds, but starting in 2016 she fought hard to get herself into shape for her debut. Khan practised yoga and attended boot camp, and started weight training, swapping out junk food for protein bars. In several months, she had achieved an inspiring transformation, and when she filmed her 2018 debut Kedarnath, she was the picture of health.

4. She’s close to her family

Although her parents divorced when she was nine years old, Khan is close to both of them. When they initially separated, her father was not allowed to see her, but her parents later reconciled. Khan remains closest to her mother, Amrita Singh; she often takes to Instagram to post pictures of herself and her mother, declaring her “my whole life everyday”. She has also admitted that one of her biggest fears is not being able to have her mother in her life. She enjoys playing tennis with her father, as well as with her brother, Ibrahim Ali Khan. She even has a healthy relationship with Kareena Kapoor, her stepmother, and has said she admires her professionalism.

5. She has remained humble

Despite her recent rise to the spotlight, Khan has said: “I don’t think I will ever let myself feel like a star. The minute you do, others will stop seeing you in a favourable light.” She’s said that being honest and remaining true to herself is the most important thing for her. Coming from such an influential family, it’s good to see her keep it down to earth.
