K-pop’s Seohyun – the Girl’s Generation maknae discovered in a subway who sings a mean Gone with the Wind
Seo Ju-hyun, better known as Seohyun, is one of the best-loved members of the phenomenally successful K-pop group Girls’ Generation. Other than establishing herself as a top idol, she's also an actress in films and stage musicals. Here are some things to know about the maknae – or youngest member – of SNSD, who turns 29 on June 28.
She was the pretend wife of Yonghwa
She appeared in MBC variety show We Got Married, where celebrities try out a married life with other stars. She was paired with CNBlue’s Yonghwa, earning the couple name “YongSeo”. Making fans’ heart flutter, they bonded over music, took adorable wedding photos, and knitted each other scarves to seal the deal.
Girl’s Generation voted her as the member who changed the most
Talking about change – during Girls' Generation’s Christmas Fairy Tale event, the girls unanimously voted Seohyun as the member who changed the most.
Hyoyeon told fans, “Before, Seohyun would cry and refuse to be part of our pranks, but now she’s very nonchalant about it”. Seohyun, the group’s youngest member, replied that she had grown used to her friends’ antics after living with them for four years.
She was discovered in a subway
Back in fifth grade, Seohyun recalled playing with her cousin in a subway station, when an agent from SM Entertainment approached her. She first thought she’d get scolded for being loud, but luck struck as the man asked if she wanted to become a singer. As for her audition, she sang a children’s song and showed off her ballet skills.
She starred in Korean versions of stage musicals
Besides her thriving acting career, Seohyun starred in multiple stage musicals such as Moon Embracing the Sun, Mamma Mia! and Gone with the Wind.
In her performance of Nous ne Sommes Pas from Gone With the Wind, she revealed her Broadway worthy talent.
She left SM Entertainment to pursue an acting career
After 15 years with SM Entertainment, Seohyun decided to leave the group in 2017. While she was grateful to the company, she wanted to be more independent. She wrote in an Instagram post, “I felt I needed to make new challenges in my life, and I had to make the decision in order to challenge myself. I'm now starting a new challenge as a singer, actress, and human Seo Ju-hyun”.
